VILLA MONASTERO: Villa Monastero (10/22 sleeping accomodations
- 310 sq.m.) is located in Eastern Tuscany, just 18 kilometers
to the southeast of the city of Florence. Eastern Tuscany has been
described as a land of saints, hermits and monasteries and Villa Monastero
was originally built as a living quarters for the farming monks of
the Vallombrosa monastery. The Vallombrosa order was founded by San
Giovanni Gualberto Visdomini in 1038 who aimed to convince other aristocrats
to also give up their riches and adopt a simpler life of greater virtue.
Contrary to these origins the order grew both rich and powerful during
the 16th and 17th centuries when the famous central abbey was built.
Villa Monastero would have been built during the early middle ages,
with the addition of its two central towers to mirror those of the
fortress-like abbey during the Renaissance.
For those wishing to explore eastern Tuscany in greater depth, the
ancient city of Arezzo is only 70 kilometers from Monastero and the
nearby hilltop town of Cortona with its narrow, steep streets and
medieval homes are perfect for visitors in search of architecture,
art, and culture. We will help guests with itineraries to towns, such
as Bibbiena (one of the oldest towns in the region, and subject to
intense territorial feuding between Arezzo and Florence in medieval
times), Poppi, and the vast Casentino region, an area of tiny villages
nested among hills covered with ages old woodland just to the north
of Arezzo. Day trips are also easily planned to all areas in Tuscany,
and we are happy to help you with itineraries to towns, such as Lucca,
Pisa, San Gimignano, Voltera, Montepulciano, Siena, and the Chianti
region. Tuscany is known for its wines and with advance notice we
can arrange for a guide to show you the area of your choosing and
can help you customize your itinerary to wineries and vineyards in
the Chianti Region.
HISTORY: Villa Monastero is surrounded by 25 acres of land, cultivated
by olive groves and a small, San Giovese vinyard, which were once
tended by the monks of the region. The monks' living quarters have
been restored into 3 apartments which may be rented on a weekly basis.
The region of Eastern Tuscany is appealing to those in search of art,
architecture and culture, but also those who would like to relax in
natural surroundings. The nearby abbey buildings at Vallombrosa are
surrounded by such beautiful woodland that John Milton described them
in his epic poem Paradise Lost (1667). The forest is the largest beechwood
forest in Europe and there are numerous marked paths and picnic areas,
in particular amongst the glorious, ages old forests within the vicinity
of the monastery at Vallombrosa.
THE APARTMENTS: The three Villa Monastero apartments all have private
bathrooms and kitchens and each can sleep from 2 to 6 persons. Every
apartment has beautiful North/South views of typical Tuscan scenery,
including groves and vines. The apartments all have high powered cooling
fans and amenities, such as toasters, microwaves, sound systems, hairdryers
and irons. Michelangelo: Common room with fireplace and
